Drumming is often called the heartbeat of Mother Earth. Drumming has been shown to alter human brainwaves to an elevated state, reduce stress, speed healing, and just be plain fun. Whether you have never played a drum before, have been drumming for years, or are somewhere in between, come join us for this open drum circle. Drums of any kind, as well as shakers, tambourines, bells, sticks, vocals, body percussion, etc. are very welcome, as are other instruments such as guitar, flute, hamonica, didgeridoo, crystal bowls, bells, gongs, and more. Some instruments will be available to borrow. If you want to drum in the security of a group and perhaps try out some solo skills, this is a perfect place to do so!

Open Drum Circle with Cathy McManamon is held several times a year at Life Force Arts Center.

Cathy McManamon is a musician who plays a variety of instruments and has been drumming in the Chicago and wider Reclaiming communities for many years. "Fire Rooster" Life Force Arts Ensemble performance

Saturday, August 31, 7:30 PM » 9:30 PM

image: Fire Rooster (c) Lisa Nomikos

Please join Life Force Arts Ensemble for another in our series of healing Performances, created for each of the eight Wheel of the Year Festivals. Surrounded by the beautiful artwork in the current LFAF art exhibit, The Waning Year, we use music, movement, story and visual art to catalyze highly transformative spiritual healing.

In tonight's healing ritual, Fire Rooster, we discover the transformative power of attuning to nature's seasons at this time of year (Harvest/Lughnnassadh, August 1) which aligns us with the harvest of the first grains; a time of abundance, but also a time when we must cut away what no longer serves us to find our true nourishment. Invoking the Phoenix/Fire Rooster who burns away the old self, this healing ritual through the arts invites us to release any past labels we may have been given, and discover our True Self.  Creative Team for Following Hidden Streams: Natalja Aicardi, Aura Chapa, Joan Forest Mage and Kristen Wray; based on a concept and painting by Lisa Nomikos.

Creating Crystal Remedy Jewelry with Steven Blaine Adams

Saturday, September 7, 3:00 PM » 7:00 PM

Learn how jewelry can be used for healing and empowering the mind, body and spirit, and create a crystal pendant as a charm for your own or another's healing. We humans are made of the same minerals as crystals, and wearing them as jewelry is an ancient practice to help us balance our energy with their vibrations, colors, memories and wisdom.

Master jewelry designer and crystal specialist Steven Blaine Adams will guide students in working hands-on with the crystals, choosing from his collection of thousands of gemstone beads to complete a pendant or earrings. No previous experience is necessary; you will learn both intuitive practices and the lore of crystals to enable you to choose the perfect gemstones for your healing intentions.

Creating Crystal Remedy Jewelry is the companion class to Steve's Connecting With Crystals workshop, which covers basic knowledge about the magical and healing properties of crystals. There are no prerequisites for either class; you do not have to take Connecting With Crystals before taking Creating Crystal Remedy Jewelry.

Steven Blaine Adams is an artist and designer who works with natural materials like stones and crystals to create symbols with spiritual resonance. The son of an astrologer and Tarot reader, Steve has been doing readings professionally for over 30 years, combining the Aquarian Tarot with the healing properties of gemstones. He is LFAC’s Associate Artistic Director and store designer. Steve attributes meditation, art, ritual and spiritual connection as instrumental catalysts in his path towards healing.

Painting The Wheel of the Year: Mabon with Colleen Koziara

Sunday, September 8, 2:00 PM » 5:00 PM

The Wheel of the Year. Time, not linear but circular. Round and round we go, and have always gone. Since the beginning of time, humans, of every faith and culture, have found time best tracked in circles. Humans have created stone circles aligned with the seasons for at least 200,000 years. Everything in life falls comfortably somewhere upon the spokes of the wheel of time. The times of day, the seasons, the astrological calendar, the trees and symbols of the Ogham, Alchemy, Festivals, ages of human life, the colors, musical notes, emotions, tides. All of time, all of creation.

This is what we will explore in this year-long series of painting classes held once a month. Eight of our sessions will focus on the seasonal festival: Imbolc, Ostara, Beltaine, Summer Solstice, Lughnassadh, Mabon, Samhain and Yule. For these sessions, we will create acrylic on canvas paintings.

Four of our sessions will focus on the Wheel of the Year Template as a whole. In these sessions, each participant will use ink pens, markers, paint, and collage on acetate sheets to create a multi-layered depiction of a personalized Wheel meaningful to their own life path.

Our theme for September 8: Mabon (Autumn Equinox) - September 21 (approximately) This festival is named after the the God of Welsh mythology, Mabon. He is the Child of Light and the son of the Earth Mother Goddess. Here is another point of perfect balance on the journey through the Wheel of the Year, its counterpart being Ostara or the Spring Equinox. Night and day are again of equal length and in perfect equilibrium - dark and light, masculine and feminine, inner and outer, in balance. But we are again on the cusp of transition and from now the year forward begins to wane and from this moment on, darkness begins to defeat the light. The cycle of the natural world is moving towards completion, the Sun's power is waning and from now on the days are shorter and cooler.

Mabon is a celebration and also a time of rest after the labour of harvest. In terms of life path it is the moment of reaping what you have sown, time to look at the hopes and aspirations of Imbolc and Ostara and reflect on how they have manifested. It is time to complete projects, to clear out and let go that which is no longer wanted or needed as we prepare for the coming darkness, so that the winter can offer a time for reflection and peace. And it is time to plant seeds of new ideas and hopes which will lie dormant but nourished in the dark, until the return of Spring. The symbol of Mabon -the Cornucopia.

For more fabulous information on these holidays, their symbolism and origins, old traditions and new, as well as simple and very real ways to bring acknowledgement of the turning of the wheel into your daily life, as well as, wonderful shopping opportunities!! I highly recommend the website/organization www.goddessandgreenmam.co.uk

All materials will be supplied and no previous experience is necessary. The class will begin with a smudging and guided meditation, and continue on with the painting session. Each session will include a central space arrangement of items that speak to the season and the spoke upon the wheel that is our focus for that session.

Additionally, each student will be provided with a computer file, and a link to a YouTube Playlist that features a wide variety of supportive documentation on The Wheel as it appears in its many varied forms and focuses: images of Circles, Mandalas and Wheels of the Year from a wide variety of cultures and locations as well as stories and legends from around the world to be used as reference material for their study.

Pre-registration is required due to material and supply orders that must be placed.

Beginning Astrology Level 1 with Lin Ewing

Monday, September 9, 7:30 PM » 9:30 PM

6 Mondays
September 9, 16, 23, 30 & October 7 & 14

This 6 session beginning astrology course is designed for anyone who wishes to learn and master astrology. It covers the fundamentals of astrology and provides a solid foundation for more advanced astrological study. If you know nothing about astrology but wish to learn, or if you already know some astrology but need structure to help you increase your skill in interpreting charts, this course will provide the knowledge you are seeking. There are no prerequisites for this course.

BEGINNING ASTROLOGY will teach you what astrology really is and how it works. You will learn:

  • the qualities and characteristics of the different signs of the zodiac
  • the mystical meaning of the symbolic glyphs of the planets
  • how the planetary energies emanate within the various signs
  • how all of this influences an individual’s horoscope

BEGINNING ASTROLOGY will give you the skills to understand not only the planets, signs and houses, but also how everything relates and interacts through the "aspects" between them. You will learn how to look at all of this information in an integrated manner so you will be able to interpret a natal chart to identify the characteristics, talents and challenges of the native. You will also learn to interpret how the transits (current positions) of the planets affect the individual at a given time. Understanding the transits will enable you to identify upcoming energy patterns; this helps you prepare both for difficulties and for opportunities, such as deciding when is best to do something - start a new venture, take a trip, make a move, make investments, etc.

This course also covers the spirituality of astrology, and addresses how the soul’s level of evolution affects what the native may or may not do with the chart with which he has incarnated. The concept that the chart is a roadmap of how the soul functions on the material plane is expressed throughout the classes. There are handouts/information given at each class meeting, and there will be a small amount of homework so that you have an opportunity to hone your skills.

When registering for the course, please email Lin Ewing at linewing@astrologicaldetails.com with your birth information. This will enable Lin to have your chart available for you at the 1st class so you can begin using your chart immediately to further your understanding of astrological concepts as they are working within you.

Birth information Lin will need:

  • Month, Day, Year of the birth
  • The Exact Time Of Birth as it appears on the birth certificate
  • The City and State of the birth. (If not born in the USA please include the Country of Birth)
